Manuel Pellegrini’s men never looked like mounting a title defence as Chelsea swept them away, but there’s every reason that they can bounce back once again next year.

The current City squad has grown year on year and this current generation has plenty of experience when it comes to winning silverware. Although setbacks happen in at least one competition every season, City have shown that they can come roaring back when hit with criticism.

Bouncebackability

City’s previous four seasons have seen them win the title then finish second the following year. Should that sequence continue then City are destined to finish 1st and claim a third Premier League title. Irrespective of patterns, City always perform better when the pressure is relieved and without a title to defend. This season they can go all out knowing they don’t have a trophy to lose. Additionally, the likes of Pablo Zabaleta, Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero have all done this before. Despite the methods of Mourinho, the pressure is all on the Blues.

The Toure Problem

Last season was a poor one for City’s star man Yaya Toure, and it showed as the club failed to win any silverware. He began the season quietly, scoring just once until mid-November, and finished with a whimper after AFCON duty, grabbing just three following his return from Equatorial Guinea. He admitted that 2014/15 was a poor year based on his performances and City fans are hoping it was just a one-off and that his disinterest can be altered somehow. For Toure, only good performances will help engineer a move away or European glory for City, and that’s surely what will happen. On his day he’s unbeatable and he should return to his best in 2016.

Little & Large – Aguero and Bony

The stats show that these two can score goals at a rate other clubs cannot imagine. Although far from the MSN triad at Barcelona, Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony know how to score goals in this division, and should form a powerful partnership over pre-season. Bony will hopefully have settled into life at the Etihad by August when the new season rolls in, and it will be vital as Aguero will need a rest. However, we reckon that by October both these guys will be in shape and scoring regularly, forming the kind of partnership Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez has at Anfield two seasons ago. It could be dynamite!

Christmas period kind

Each team does have their run of comfortable fixtures and City have theirs over the crucial Xmas period. Wherever they are in the league, a run of successive wins across the busy schedule could fire them into a powerful position come February. Aside from a clash against Arsenal, City face Stoke, Swansea, Sunderland, Leicester, Watford, Everton, Palace, West Ham and Sunderland and Leicester again from December to mid-February. If they can keep their form together, they could actually maintain a lead at the top until the end of the season for the first time.

Sterling, Pogba, De Bruyne and whoever else?!

City’s wealthy owners will surely give Pellegrini sufficient funds to blow other teams in Europe out of the water and bring in some of the best talent around. Two bids for Raheem Sterling have already been rejected, but interest in Paul Pogba, Kevin De Bruyne and many others continue as City look to strengthen. Whoever City bring in can help them massively, especially if they make a marquee signing like one of these players. Chelsea spent big to win the title last year so City could follow the same tactic and engage in a money war!
