There was a familiar feel to the start of the new La Liga season, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both recording easy wins to get their campaign off to a successful start.
Barcelona top the embryonic league table after a thrilling 6-2 demolition of Real Betis, while Zinedine Zidane’s side continued their fine form from the end of last season by winning impressively by a score of 3-0 at Real Sociedad.
However, Atletico Madrid are already two points behind their title rivals after they could only draw 1-1 at home against Alaves, with that result a potentially damaging one for Diego Simeone’s side.
It was a hugely exciting opening weekend for La Liga, with Sevilla’s 6-4 home success against Espanyol a very early for the best match of the season, while Las Palmas won 4-2 at Valencia.
More goals are likely to be flying in around Spain this weekend, but where are Real and Barca in action and what are the best value betting odds for their games?
Real Madrid v Celta Vigo
With a run of 13 wins in a row on the board, Zidane’s men are understandably hot favourites to claim another three points when Celta Vigo visit Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.
Despite the very early stage of the season there is huge pressure on Real to win all of their home games, with a total of 90 points or more again likely to be needed to claim the La Liga title.
Madrid have won five of the last six games they have played against Celta Vigo so the head-to-head record is in their favour here. A price of 4/21 is understandably very short on a Real Madrid win for this game so we will have to look a bit deeper in the markets to find good value.
In 12 of those 13 straight wins Real Madrid have also been leading at half-time, so Real Madrid HT/FT is a bet that makes a lot of sense at odds of 20/41, while Zidane’s side are 10/19 to win the first half of the match.
All five of Real Madrid’s wins over Celta Vigo in the last six meetings between the sides have seen over 2.5 goals scored so it is also worth taking on the 5/12 on Real to win with over 2.5 goals scored. The 20/27 on Real Madrid HT/FT with over 2.5 goals scored looks good value too.
Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona
Barcelona’s fixture looks a lot trickier on paper, with Athletic Bilbao posing a strong threat despite losing their opening game of the new La Liga season 2-1 to Sporting Gijon last weekend.
Like Real, Barcelona also have a winning streak to protect having won six in a row in La Liga and they are 5/11 to make it seven straight victories.
There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 15 of Barcelona’s last 17 games so Barcelona to win with over 2.5 goals scored stands out at a decent value price of 6/5.
The last two meetings between the sides were in last year’s Copa Del Rey and although Barca won both legs of the tie, Athletic scored in each game. This means Barcelona to win with both teams to score is also worth considering at 17/10.
Luis Suarez hit yet another Barcelona hat-trick last weekend and he is likely to be in the goals again, with Barcelona made a tempting 33/10 to score at least four goals in this match.
