Burnley head into today’s clash with Sunderland six points clear of the relegation zone and they can put a bit more breathing space between themselves and the bottom three with a big three points today.
The Black Cats have found a bit of form of late with two wins in their last five games. Both of those successes have come at the Stadium of Light though and away from home their form remains woeful, with just four points to show from nine Premier League games to date.
The Clarets have an incredible home record and at 7/5 in the standard match betting market they’re worth backing but for my final offering of 2016 I think we can do a bit better.
Everton and Southampton have let me down in the last two days after some real success with Liverpool and Burnley, so hopefully the Clarets can again come in and help us all end this year with a bang.
Sunderland are in the midst of an injury crisis with at least seven players missing for today’s clash. The most recent name added to their absentee list is keeper Jordan Pickford and his absence will be a big blow.
Vito Mannone is an able deputy but he isn’t of the same standard as the English youngster and Burnley should be able to take at least one of their chances at Turf Moor, as they have scored in all of their previous five home games, with four wins and a narrow loss to Manchester City during that run.
Indeed, if the league table was based on home matches alone the Clarets would be riding high in fifth spot, above both Manchester teams, and as Sunderland have managed just three goals in their last seven away league games I’m going for a home win to zero as my top bet for this clash at 12/5.
Sunderland do carry a goal threat in Jermain Defoe and Burnley aren’t exactly clean sheet specialists but after grabbing one in their last Turf Moor outing against Middlesbrough they may well keep another shut out today.
Meanwhile, at the top of the table Liverpool host Manchester City in today’s late kick off in a heavyweight clash that could go either way. Personally I’m tempted by the 51/20 on a home win with with both teams to score but as City have Sergio Aguero back it is hard to go against them, and the Argentine star is 1/1 to score at anytime if you think he will make a statement on his return from suspension.
