City offer threat to FA Cup favourites

The draw for the semi-finals of the FA Cup took place on Monday night and Chelsea have now been made the 21/10 favourites to lift the famous trophy in May.

The Blues impressed again during their 1-0 quarter-final win over Manchester United and were then handed a last-four encounter with Tottenham at Wembley.

Although Spurs have beaten Chelsea this term – a 2-0 success at White Hart Lane in January – a lot this time around will depend on the fitness of Harry Kane after he suffered an ankle problem against Millwall.

The England striker is crucial to Mauricio Pochettino’s side and a lengthy injury absence will be a massive blow to their hopes of a strong end to the campaign.

It has been 26 years since Tottenham last lifted the FA Cup and, in the meantime, Chelsea, who are 23/20 to win the semi-final, have secured the trophy six times.

Another concern for Spurs fans will be their form at the home of English football this season, having won just one of their four European ties played under the Wembley arch.

Chelsea have won eight of their last nine cup games at the national stadium – seven FA Cup matches and one League Cup tie – and also beat Tottenham, who are 11/5 to win the April clash, 5-1 in their last meeting there.

Meanwhile, the other semi-final sees Manchester City (21/20) come up against Arsenal (47/20, draw 12/5).

On current league form, City would look to have the edge over the Gunners although it is actually Arsenal who have enjoyed the better of recent meetings.

Arsene Wenger’s men have only lost one of the last six against City and that was the clash in December last year when the visitors came from behind to win 2-1 at the Etihad.

Arsenal, who are 15/4 to lift the trophy, have won their last four matches at Wembley and are looking to claim the FA Cup for the third time in four years.

City, the 2011 winners, are on an 11-game unbeaten run, winning their last three matches without conceding a goal, and look to be resolving their defensive issues. Pep Guardiola’s men are 11/5 to win the FA Cup this season.

All in all, after disappointing quarter-final fixtures, it promises to be a fascinating semi-final weekend, with two mouth-watering ties coming up.
