As the Premier League returns this weekend, the race to be top-scorer looks set to be another tight affair. With quality players oozing from sides up and down the country, here are some of the names likely to be in the goals.
Harry Kane – 23/10
England’s skipper was denied a hattrick of golden boots last season, despite firing home a whopping 30 goals. Instead having to be content with a Golden Boot winning World Cup, Kane will be keen to wrestle the title of deadliest forward in the land back from Mo Salah. With 105 Premier League goals over the last four years – not bad for a bit part player at Leyton Orient – expect the Walthamstow Wonder to be there or thereabouts once more.
Mohamed Salah – 5/1
The Egyptian King reigned supreme over Anfield following his arrival from Roma last summer. Romping home to the Golden Boot with a record 32 goals in 36 games, Salah was the undoubted standout in Liverpool’s deadly front three. Inevitably, cries of “one season wonder” will be heard after such an impressive first campaign for the Reds. But with Jurgen Klopp’s self-proclaimed ‘heavy metal football’ set to rock the Kop again, it could be another unforgettable season.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 6/1
January signings often fail to make an instant impact but Aubameyang bucked the trend after arriving from Dortmund at the start of 2018. Bagging an impressive 10 goals in 13 league games, the Gabonese man was a bright spark in an otherwise forgettable season for Arsenal. Now with a full campaign ahead of him, and new manager Unai Emery hoping to lift the mood at the Emirates, all signs point to a prolific year for the jet-heeled Gunners frontman.
Sergio Aguero – 6/1
City’s highest ever goalscorer looked in ominous form during the Community Shield clash with Chelsea, slotting home his 200th and 201st goals for the champions. It’ll be intriguing to see if the diminutive Argentinian is subjected to squad rotation this season, with Pep Guardiola often favouring Gabriel Jesus (12/1) for certain games last term. Prolific since the day he set foot in Manchester, Aguero rightly deserves to be considered a contender.
Romelu Lukaku – 8/1
Unquestionably Jose Mourinho’s main man upfront, Lukaku will be aiming to improve after a solid, if unspectacular, first season at Old Trafford. Frightening to play against when firing on all cylinders, the big Belgium is arguably the finest all-round forward on this list. Despite a preseason of discontent for United, the squad has undoubted quality in the final third and with Lukaku set to be an ever-present in the side, opportunities to find the net should be high.
Alexandre Lacazette (22/1) and Alexis Sanchez (22/1) will be trying to outshine teammates Aubameyang and Lukaku respectively. Can Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata (28/1) put a difficult first year in West London behind him under Maurizio Sarri? With so much attacking intent in their sides, Roberto Firmino (28/1), Raheem Sterling (50/1) and Sadio Mane (50/1) are worth a shout. Jamie Vardy (40/1) looks to be the best of the rest when betting on the British contingent.
