The Scottish Premier League returned last weekend and there were plenty of familiar sights.
Wins for Celtic, Hibernian, Hearts and Kilmarnock were amongst the more predictable outcomes, while Aberdeen and Rangers quite literally locking horns wasn’t much of a surprise to anyone.
Neither, according to Steven Gerrard, was a big decision going against the Ibrox side. Alfredo Morelos was red-carded at Pittodrie on Sunday for aiming a retaliatory kick in the direction of a Dons defender.
His misdemeanour was downgraded to a caution this week, seemingly on account of the fact it was essentially a fresh-air shot, so the striker will be available when Rangers host St Mirren on Sunday.
Presumably he’ll have worked on his volley-connection technique. Rangers look good to win in Govan and can take care of a St Mirren side that started with a 2-1 win over Dundee last weekend.
More value however comes from that Aberdeen side that couldn’t defeat 10-men last weekend.
Derek McInnes’ team are the favourites to win on their trip to Dundee on Saturday and they appeal. Victory at Dens Park will make it 10 successive Aberdeen wins over this opposition.
They’ve also managed to shut out their opponents during seven of those nine encounters and are worthy favourites here after a decent pre-season and the boost of that late goal again Rangers on Sunday.
The Saturday lunchtime game sees Hearts hosting Celtic, where the topic of conversation might once again be the length of grass at Tynecastle.
The 4-0 rout in Edinburgh last December that ended Brendan Rodgers’ domestic ‘Invincibles’ was a rare moment of joy for Hearts in this fixture. They’ve lost five times either side of that game, conceding 17 times in doing so.
The Jambos has scored in their last four games against Celtic however and that might be the way to go here too. Hearts are a good price to find the net against the champions and, with Celtic minds fixed on Athens in midweek, are fancied to manage that at least.
Elsewhere this weekend, Kilmarnock look a fair price to make it two wins from two this season in their trip to Premiership new boys Livingston, who might just require a few weeks to find their feet back in the top flight.
