Fierce Old Firm battle on the cards

Even the most avid fan of either side will admit that last season’s Old Firm clashes became a bit one-dimensional.

That might change on Sunday at Parkhead when the Steven Gerrard-led Rangers cross the city to face his old mentor, Brendan Rodgers, and Celtic.

There is only one game capturing the imagination in Scotland this weekend and it could be a humdinger.

Over 0.5 Red Cards @ 33/20

Gerrard has put some fight into Rangers again but too much at times. Alfredo Morelos and Jon Flanagan both picked up red cards in their Europa League qualifier on Thursday night in Russia. It isn’t the first time this season indiscipline has caught Rangers out.

Celtic are no shrinking violets either, with the likes Mikael Lustig and Leigh Griffiths capable of perhaps letting this occasion get to them. The Hoops have bossed the game in recent times against Rangers and might not like it served to them on their own patch.

Red cards have been shown in two of the last three Old Firm games, while Celtic’s 5-0 win in April was too much of a stroll for anyone to get sent off. This game could be very fiery and the price on a red card arguably should be shorter.

Celtic to win and both teams to score @ 41/20

Rodgers hasn’t come close to losing against Rangers in 11 attempts as Celtic have lost once in 38 home league games, while Rangers, for all the shoots of recovery under Gerrard, have drawn their last four league games away from Ibrox.

They also had a nightmare game in Russia on Thursday evening and might be suffering some effects now. Celtic, meanwhile, cruised past Suduva.

What cannot be argued is that Celtic’s defence remains leaky, but Rangers were also porous in a six-goal thriller against Motherwell last weekend. Rangers can make a fist of this game and I fully anticipate Gerrard will get a win over Rodgers this season, but doing it first time out is asking a lot.

Celtic still have the firepower to hurt their city rivals and can win an entertain derby tussle.

Hearts and Aberdeen to win @ 7/4

Before Glasgow takes centre stage, league leaders Hearts and Aberdeen can gain victories on Saturday.

The Jambos face St Mirren at Tynecastle and are expected to continue their perfect start to the season against a visiting side that has lost its last two games without scoring.

Similarly, Steve Clarke’s Kilmarnock haven’t scored since the first day of the season and meet an Aberdeen side growing in confidence once again at Pittodrie. The Dons were pegged back late on at Hibs last week and can atone on their own patch.
