The US Open has provided us with plenty of upsets this year and John Isner may be the next to defy the odds when he takes on Juan Martin del Potro in the quarter-finals this evening.
Isner to win @ 11/4
Del Potro is a former US Open champion and is yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows so the Argentine heads into this as the legitimate favourite. The 29-year-old is also enjoying one of his best-ever seasons and sits at a career high three in the world rankings – but he has struggled against Isner on hard courts in previous meetings.
Del Potro brushed the American aside 3-0 at the French Open on clay but Isner prevailed 2-0 in their last hard-court match in Miami earlier this year. At 11/4, the 11th seed looks worth the risk to claim a victory but if you want to play it a little safer Isner with a +1.5 set handicap at 7/5 is a solid option.
Sloane Stephens to beat Anastasija Sevastova 2-0 @ 10/11
Defending champion Stephens has dropped just one set so far at the US Open and can make light work of Latvia’s Sevastova, who is bidding to reach a first ever Grand Slam semi-final.
The 18th seed has produced some excellent performances to reach the last eight but Stephens should have too much power and I’m expecting the American to come through with a fairly comfortable 2-0 win.
