Southampton can make it three victories in a row on Thursday by edging to victory against West Ham United at St Mary’s.
Saints have been a different team since Ralph Hasenhuttl succeeded Mark Hughes as their manager just over three weeks ago and, after winning just one of their first 16 Premier League fixtures this season, they have recorded back-to-back victories against Arsenal and Huddersfield Town under the former RB Leipzig coach’s guidance.
It has been quite a transformation as Southampton have scored six goals in those two matches after only managing to find the net 13 times in their first 16 fixtures.
Danny Ings scored a penalty against the Terriers on Saturday to bring the former Burnley striker’s goal tally for the season up to seven and he is 5/1 to score the first goal against Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Watford in their last match.
That setback ended the Hammers’ impressive four-match winning run and they have a lengthy injury list to contend with at the moment with the likes of Javier Hernandez, Marko Arnautovic, Jack Wilshere, Carlos Sanchez and Manuel Lanzini among a host of players set to miss the match.
Those absences combined with Southampton’s recent improvement suggest West Ham could struggle on the south coast although the St Mary’s clash could be an entertaining affair.
The hectic festive schedule usually means there are more goals than at other times of the year so a high-scoring clash could be on the cards.
The home team’s recent return to form suggests they have remembered where the goal is while Pellegrini’s side are unbeaten in their last four away matches in a run stretching back to early October when they lost 1-0 at Brighton.
