Little to divide Spurs and Dortmund

Tottenham beat Borussia Dortmund twice in the group stage of last season’s Champions League but may find it difficult to knock the Bundesliga leaders out of the competition this term, while revitalised Real Madrid should get the better of Ajax in the last 16.

Dortmund, 25/1 to win the Champions League outright, may have drawn their last two Bundesliga matches but they are still five points clear of second-placed Bayern Munich. They showed their quality in October when they thrashed Atletico Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League.

Dortmund to draw 1-1 at Spurs @ 21/4

Lucien Favre’s side are outstanding at home and have only shown some frailty on their travels fleetingly, although they did lose 2-0 to Atletico in the return game in Madrid and were beaten by Fortuna Dusseldorf in December.

Spurs have continued their excellent campaign despite the absence of Harry Kane and Dele Alli in the last few weeks but Wednesday’s game will be a severe test for Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

They have struggled at times at Wembley this term and may have to settle for a draw against Dortmund in the first leg.

Real win and both teams to score @ 19/10

When the draw for the last 16 of the Champions League was made in December, Real Madrid were in some disarray, having lost 3-0 at home to CSKA Moscow and slipping to fifth spot in La Liga.

There were fears that Real, 11/1 to win the Champions League outright, may not even qualify for next season’s competition, but a run of five La Liga victories in a row, including Saturday’s 3-1 derby victory at Atletico, have silenced the doubters.

In contrast Ajax’s form has deserted them since Christmas and, after slumping to an embarrassing 6-2 defeat at Feyenoord last month, they managed to lose to mid-table Heracles at the weekend.

Ajax may have held Bayern Munich to draws in the group stage of the Champions League before Christmas but there is little to suggest they can stop Real’s progress to the quarter-finals for the ninth campaign in a row.
