Fresh Talent Sprouts of IPL
Written By: Bhawana Jarwal
IPL is a talent hunt and the careers of youngsters change over a space of just 2 months. We have seen the rise of many uncapped youngsters escalating through this league and ended up playing many years in International cricket. Here is a brief account of 10 such novice cricketers from each IPL team who could make it big in the future.
1. Rajvardhan Hangargekar, CSK:
Rajvardhan’s name was surrounded by huge hype even before the auction, due to his huge six-hitting prowess in the domestic circuit. Surprisingly Chennai backed the young talent from Maharashtra, as they did with Ruturaj a few years back from the same state. Hangarekar is one of the rare assets in Indian cricket, being a fast-bowling all-rounder. He is warming up to start for the men in yellow, as Deepak Chahar is not available till April mid, and this gives the youngster a great opportunity to play and hone his skills under MS Dhoni. He was operating the new ball during the last U-19 World Cup and is likely to continue for his Ipl team as well, adding to his ability to hit monstrous sixes down the ground.
2. Abhinav Manohar, GT:
The finisher from Karnataka will be wielding his bat for Gujarat Titans in his maiden IPL season. He will be playing alongside Hardik Pandya, which will help him to develop more as a cricketer. He made a big announcement through the last Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament that led to his call-up in the IPL. He is a cool customer in pressure situations and that was evident in the domestic tournament. He is set to play a key role for GT and might be one of the deciding factors in the middle order for Gujarat in this season.
3. Riyan Parag, RR:
Riyan Parag is one of the most exciting young talents in the country. At 20, he has already shown glimpses and flair of his skillset in the last couple of years and that is one of the reasons why Rajasthan Royals has trusted him for the next cycle again. He has been in great touch for Assam with the bat and ball in this domestic season and is likely to play as a finisher for this side at 6. Though it’s not an easy job, with a long-term investment, Rajasthan can look up to him in the upcoming decade as one of the rising stars.
4. Tilak Varma, MI:
Tilak Varma is one natural young talent in the domestic circuit, has scored a truckload of runs for Hyderabad in different formats, and has been a promising player in the rising. He was so competent and up to par against the spin during the short term in the domestics. It will be interesting to see where Tilak bats for Mumbai. He will be an ideal choice at 3 or 4, as Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma will be opening for the team. He has faced some tough situations, playing for Hyderabad, and has bailed them out of trouble many times as well. This experience will be helping him in his Mumbai stint in April and May. Also, the experience surrounding him in the MI batting, dugout, and dressing room will groom him to develop more as a cricketer going forward.
5. Anuj Rawat, RCB:
Anuj Rawat is one of the highly skilled players from Delhi. He was part of the Rajasthan Royals setup and has been roped in by Royal Challengers Bangalore this season. He is a flexible batter, able to bat anywhere in the Top 5, and can be the wicket-keeper option for the team.
He has been praised by many former stars over the years and is on the race to become one bright and encouraging player for the future. With the right momentum and support system, he can cement a place in the long run for team India and the IPL franchise. Royal Challengers are likely to play him in the top 3 which will help him to express more as a player on the big stage.
6. Shahrukh Khan, Punjab Kings:
The Indian Pollard. That is how Shahrukh Khan is by-named on domestic levels. He hasn’t kept the Ipl on fire but has immense potential if he can get the backing from the management. He has finished umpteen games for Tamil Nadu in different formats and has shown his love affair to six-hitting at any stage of a match. This year’s IPL will be vital for Shahrukh Khan as well, to exhibit his talent, and if he can open the eyes of selectors through his performances, he can be one of the players in the core setup for the T20 World Cup in Australia.
7. Kartik Tyagi, SRH:
Tyagi is one of the most promising youngsters in Indian cricket in the fast bowling department. He can bowl in different phases of a match and has displayed his mastery with the ball a few times during the last IPL. It was a personal surprise for me that RR left him as there was an opportunity to retain him for just 4 cr, and it turned out to be a bonanza for Sunrisers as they got him in the mega auction. He can be a future asset for IPL and Indian cricket if he can continue with his fitness and good rhythm.
8. Shivam Mavi, KKR:
Mavi, similar to Tyagi is another U-19 product, that is grabbing the attention of cricketing fans. KKR has trusted him and put lots of faith in him in the last 4 seasons, even during his injury phases. Mavi has been an asset whenever he got opportunities for KKR, and this time, he will be leading the pace battery along with Pat Cummins. He can generate swing and bowl at a raw pace, adding to his ability to take wickets in the powerplay( which he did for KKR during last season). The team management will be looking at him as a long-term project moving in the side.
9. Sarfraz Khan, DC:
Sarfraz will be looking for a new start with Delhi Capitals this time. Even though he was part of RCB and PBKS earlier, he couldn’t make it big through both teams. Confidence evoking domestic season this time and playing under his U-19 mate, with Ponting in the dugout, I believe, will help to unleash a new Sarfraz for this season. He was given various roles in both the teams without much backing, but with a new franchise and what Delhi has been doing in the last 3-to 4 seasons, hoping that it’d help Sarfraz to express himself to be a new player in the IPL from this year.
10. Ankit Rajpoot, Lucknow:
Ankit Rajpoot has been in the talking point for a long time but hasn’t taken his career to the next level. With Lucknow, Ankit will be looking to embark on a new journey, as he has a special ability to hit the deck so hard and can contribute a lot in the middle overs.
He might not start the season, but a very good bowler to have in the backup system in an IPL core, and he will be eager to get an opportunity to prove most of the critics wrong. With talents flowing in each year, it will be high time for Ankit to get in the rhythm in this IPL.
IPL is not just a cricketing extravaganza, it is a sweepstake for foreign players and budding raw talents. As new stars are born, and careers get so many turnarounds through this league, it will be interesting to see how these players embrace and get a move on with their new team journeys. We have seen the rise of players like Raina, Ashwin through the league who has cemented their places on the national side for so long. Whereas one-time wonders like Paul Valthaatty and Swapnil’s performances are still etched in our memories. Let’s just hope that these stars of tomorrow make it big and bright and bring more glory to self as well to the nation.
