India needs to plug a lot of holes in all three departments to achieve the favorable. Their bowling seemed dreadfully out of shape, kept leaking runs, and neither picked up wickets at quick intervals. Even the batting roster wasn’t impressive. Despite going off to a flying start, they lost too many wickets in succession, building pressure on the lower order batsmen. Shikhar Dhawan and Hardik Pandya kept India in the hunt, but the target proved too much in the end.
Nevertheless, this Indian squad is well-resourced to turn things around in this ODI series, with the likes of Shreyas Iyer, IPL’s highest run-getter KL Rahul, and skipper Virat Kohli eager to make compensations for their no-show on Friday.
The hosts Aussies, in the meantime, mostly had a great match. The bowling unit showed character. Josh Hazlewood bowled fiercely up top, and spinner Adam Zampa picked up critical wickets in the middle overs. How not to forget the splendid batting roster.
