Potential replacements for NCN

Written By: Prithvi (Puneite_)

Australian fast bowler Nathan Coulter Nile has been ruled out of the IPL due to a side strain sustained during the opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Rajasthan Royals have Obed McCoy in the back ups who had an impressive home season last year where he took 9 wickets against SA and 5 wickets against Australia. This included two 4-wicket hauls and one 3-fer. They also have Kuldip Yadav, Kuldip Sen and Anunay Singh in the reserves.

Below is a list of potential replacements for Nathan Coulter Nile:

1. David Weise

He has been making news with his all-round performances right from the CPL, T20 WC to the recently held PSL. Wiese debuted for Namibia in the WT20 Qualifiers  and won two Man of the Match awards in first 3 matches which helped helping Namibia qualify for the Super 12.

Wiese played 5 games in CPL 2021. He took 11 wickets and scored 91 runs down the order. In this year’s PSL, Wiese took 9 wickets for the Lahore Qalandars at an economy of 8.36. He scored 168 runs at an SR of 184 which included 28(8) in the final, and a player of the match award in Eliminator when he again scored 28(8). Wiese had a superb outing in 2015 for RCB. He took 16 wickets and smashed 122 runs at a strike rate of 141 in 7 innings.

2. Blessing Muzarabani

Muzarabani played in the PSL for Multan Sultans. He picked up 10 wickets at an economy of 7.71 for the Sultans in last year’s edition of the Pakistan Super League. In the final, he picked up the prized scalps of Zazai-Powell and ended up with figures of 2/26 from 4 overs.

He picked up 5 wickets in this year’s edition which included a spell of 3/18 against the Peshawar Zalmi. Overall, this fast bowling sensation from Harare has 44 wickets to his name in the T20 format at an economy of 7.81. But his availability could be a major factor. Ireland are scheduled to tour Zimbabwe in April and May for 1 test, 5 ODIs and 3 T20s. Muzarabani is currently with the Lucknow Super Ginats as a net bowler. There were rumours that he was the replacement for Mark Wood but they ended up signing Andrew Tye.

3. Hayden Kerr

Hayden Kerr is an emerging star of Australian cricket. He smashed 98* from 58 deliveries opening the batting to send a depleted Sydney Sixers side into the BBL11 final. He was the 2nd highest wicket taker in this year’s edition of the Big Bash league with 25 wickets from 17 innings at an economy of 7.5. A left-arm pace bowler is always a big advantage. “I just put myself in for the absolute minimum amount, hopefully there’s an opportunity there if someone needs a back-up bowler, all-rounder or something like that. You never know if there’s a few injuries, hopefully the innings last night has helped cement my spot as an all-rounder” This is how Kerr had expressed his desire to play in the IPL after that knock of 98*.

4. Reece Topley

RR have left handed Obed McCoy in the squad. They could also look at other left handers like George Garton, Sheldon Cottrell, Reece Topley, Joshua Little, Ruben Trumpelmann, Shoriful Islam and Ben Dwarshuis. Among these, Joshua Little, Topley and Cottrell are better choices to go with.

Reece Topley the 6’7 tall pacer is the most experienced bowler in this format with 104 games. He has scalped 131 wickets at an economy of  8.21. In the last few months he has been in decent touch in BBL where he picked 9 wickets from 8 games and in the recent series in the Caribbean where he played 4 games and had an economical outing in 3 of them.

5. Joshua Little

The Ireland Pacer had joined the Chennai Super Kings as a net bowler ahead of the IPL. Josh has taken 54 wkts from 54 t20 games with a career best of 4/23. For Ireland, he has picked 31 wkts at an economy of 7.4. He swings the ball with decent pace and is equally good at the death.
